Tui-Na vs. Deep Tissue

"Tui-Na massage goes deeper than deep tissue massage."

– Bin, Owner of Pain Away of Philly.

But really, what is the Deep Tissue Massage, and how is it different compared to the Tui-Na Massage?

The term Tui-Na (pronounced "twee naw"), which literally means "pinch and pull," refers to a wide range of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapeutic massage and body work. Tui-na is not generally used for pleasure and relaxation, but rather as a treatment to address specific patterns of disharmony.

Tui-Na is a traditional Chinese medical massage treatment with NO oil, this type of treatment has been used for thousands of years in China. Costumers are likely to experience a lot of discomforts because we mainly target meridians and acupuncture point, which is deeper than deep tissue.

The pressure used while performing Tui-na is the same throughout the body. There will be some areas that will be more tender and more discomfort, and it is because of the system you might have in your body—symptoms such as a block of Qi, moisture in your body, or just very tight muscles. Tui-Na is NOT a relaxing massage. Tui-Na is a Chinese Medical treatment that will focus on fixing the problem from the origin.

Deep Tissue massages use firm pressure and slow stroked to massage deep layers of muscle and fascia, the connective tissue surrounding your muscles. It's similar to the Swedish Massage such that it helps to relax. However, it uses more pressure than the Swedish Massage. If you want to relax only, you can try Swedish massage, which is designed to relax the entire body by rubbing the muscles in long with gentle strokes by using oil.
